Denim Quilt

I got the idea of making this denim quilt from this article. As soon as I saw it, I loved it! And the directions were well written and easy to understand.

Although some parts of this project were a little more tedious than others (cutting circles, pinning!), all in all, I enjoy sewing and I really enjoyed making this.

And even though the directions warned me that it would be heavy, I decided to make it about 85" x 90". And, good Lord, it is the heaviest blanket, ever!! Jake used it for a couple of nights, and rated it a two thumbs up. Then I was resting on the sofa with it, and got so sleepy, I couldn't get up. I think it's the Magic Blanket of Sleep. I really like it.

Winnie the Pooh - this was one of Jake's receiving blankets.

I decided to experiment with a shape, and got this butterfly.

And also...

today is my baby girl's birthday!! We'll have to break open a can of tuna later. :D

Unfuckingbelievable!

Ok, so, I'm having company tonight. My friend Ericka is coming over for Movie Night. We are going to watch Slither (which she's never seen), and I figured I'd introduce her to Dr. Horrible, as well. I woke up really late today (I've had insomnia), and have been working on cleaning and putting away the whole quilt-making-mess, etc. (The quilt is done! Post to come later.) And I HAD to get a nursing necklace made to ship today. Part of the plan was to get out of the house at 4pm to go grocery shopping and mail the necklace. But when 4pm came, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was announced on the local news. Hmmm...ok, I can work with that. It should be over by 5 or maybe even 4:30, and I'll run out then, and still be home before 6. But now...wait for it...they've announced a TORNADO warning. Really? WTF? We just don't GET tornados here. Hurricanes, sometimes, but not tornados. But, today, we may very well be having a tornado. So I'm staying home. The sky is really dark, and it's raining with thunder and lightning. People are already in their cars for the evening commute. I hope people who have not left work yet have the sense to stay put, and the ones already on the road get home quickly.

And I have a very limited view of the outside from my apartment windows. Will I even know if something's coming?

And more importantly, will Ericka still be able to come over tonight? Eep.

EDIT: Ok, the Tornado Warning has been cancelled. We've still got serious rain and thunder and lightning, but maybe it's going to let up soon.

Bon Jovi Fever

Yep, they were in Boston again. And I went to see them again. The boy, my sis and I took the train near sis' house right into North Station, and the Garden is right there. Great show, as usual. I monkeyed around with my camera's video setting a few times, and here's what I got (be gentle, it's my first time):

Keep the Faith:

Note the end of this one, when the picture gets obstructed, and I abruptly put the camera down and shut it off. Here's the inside of my brain right then: "Hey, what the Hell is that in my way?!? Oh, it's a badge. A badge? Yes, it's the badge of the security officer, and look, he's giving me a really dirty look while I illegally take video of the concert! Fuck, I'd better put this away now!!!!"

Raise Your Hands:

This is just a small snippet, from my seat on the side I had a great view of the audience, and the interaction between them and Jon was cool.

We Got It Goin' On:

I had been a bit disappointed with the seats we got, but we did get some close views anyway! :D

Serious Unagi

Jake and I have this mental connection. We really 'get' each other, and can even sometimes finish each others sentences. We call this 'unagi', after Ross' concept in Friends:

So, today Jake and I had some serious unagi going on:

Me (having just gone to the outside door to the building to find a UPS notice, and being a bit pissed because we've been home all day): Jake, did the doorbell ring today?

Jake (his mouth stuffed full of the snack cake I gave him, and unable to speak): *holds up three fingers*

Me: It rang three times?

Jake: *nods his head*

Me: When?

Jake: *points toward the wall in front of him*

Me: When I was in the shower? (Because on the other side of that wall is the hall, and then the bathroom.)

Jake: *nods his head*

Me: Ok, thanks. Shoot, I wish I didn't miss it.

Jake: *waves his hand very animatedly*

Me: What? 'Go away, Mom, I'm trying to listen to YouTube here?'

Jake: *nods his head and gives me a thumbs up*

I love that kid.

Mish-Mash

________________________________________________

Scene from later in the day:

Something was on the TV about teen pregnancy. Now, I've been trying to keep the lines of communication open with The Boy about teen sex and about sex in general, so I took the opportunity to start a dialog. The following exchange took place:

Me: And what have we learned about sex?
Boy: Foamy!

I'm ever so proud. And we did have an actual, real talk about it after. And also, if you are not a fan of Buffy, the above makes absolutely no sense to you.

I spent several hours today working on the quilt. All of the sewing of the circles is completed and today I worked on pinning the flannel squares in, so they can be sewn. I hate pinning. It's boring, it takes FOREVER, and it hurts my fingers. Today's work got me about 1/3 of the way done. Next I'll sew what I've pinned, then pin more, then sew that, etc. If I weren't so tired, I'd take a picture and show you all the pinning.

I'm also eating Mug Cake while I type this:

Mug Cake

- 1 egg
- 4 T milk
- 3 T oil
- 4 T sugar
- 4 T flour
- 2 T chocolate powder (optional)
- 1 t baking powder

In a 300ml (11 oz ) mug, mix all ingredients. Microwave for 3 minutes (might be 2 depending on your microwave).

I picked that recipe off one of the boards I frequent. It was ok, except it exploded a bit out of the mug. I think I overcooked it, even though I put it on for only 2 minutes.

Speaking of boards, is it just me, or has the WD been down for a couple days? I'm really starting to go through withdrawls. *sob*
