Serious Unagi

Jake and I have this mental connection. We really 'get' each other, and can even sometimes finish each others sentences. We call this 'unagi', after Ross' concept in Friends:





So, today Jake and I had some serious unagi going on:

Me (having just gone to the outside door to the building to find a UPS notice, and being a bit pissed because we've been home all day): Jake, did the doorbell ring today?

Jake (his mouth stuffed full of the snack cake I gave him, and unable to speak): *holds up three fingers*

Me: It rang three times?

Jake: *nods his head*

Me: When?

Jake: *points toward the wall in front of him*

Me: When I was in the shower? (Because on the other side of that wall is the hall, and then the bathroom.)

Jake: *nods his head*

Me: Ok, thanks. Shoot, I wish I didn't miss it.

Jake: *waves his hand very animatedly*

Me: What? 'Go away, Mom, I'm trying to listen to YouTube here?'

Jake: *nods his head and gives me a thumbs up*



I love that kid.

Scene from later in the day:

Something was on the TV about teen pregnancy. Now, I've been trying to keep the lines of communication open with The Boy about teen sex and about sex in general, so I took the opportunity to start a dialog. The following exchange took place:

Me: And what have we learned about sex?
Boy: Foamy!

I'm ever so proud. And we did have an actual, real talk about it after. And also, if you are not a fan of Buffy, the above makes absolutely no sense to you.

I spent several hours today working on the quilt. All of the sewing of the circles is completed and today I worked on pinning the flannel squares in, so they can be sewn. I hate pinning. It's boring, it takes FOREVER, and it hurts my fingers. Today's work got me about 1/3 of the way done. Next I'll sew what I've pinned, then pin more, then sew that, etc. If I weren't so tired, I'd take a picture and show you all the pinning.

I'm also eating Mug Cake while I type this:

Mug Cake

- 1 egg
- 4 T milk
- 3 T oil
- 4 T sugar
- 4 T flour
- 2 T chocolate powder (optional)
- 1 t baking powder

In a 300ml (11 oz ) mug, mix all ingredients. Microwave for 3 minutes (might be 2 depending on your microwave).

I picked that recipe off one of the boards I frequent. It was ok, except it exploded a bit out of the mug. I think I overcooked it, even though I put it on for only 2 minutes.

Speaking of boards, is it just me, or has the WD been down for a couple days? I'm really starting to go through withdrawls. *sob*

Dizzy up the girl

I'm dizzy today (yesterday, too). Literally. I used some tea tree oil on my scalp the other night and I think that might be the cause of it. I'm ok if I'm sitting and taking it easy, but being active sets it off. It's not too bad, not like, "OMG I'm gonna puke!" It's tolerable. But I had to decline an invitation to 'game night' from my friend Ericka tonight. :(

I did clean house for a bit today, but now I need to take it easy for a bit. I'll do the dishes later. I'm also going to be pinning and sewing my quilting project. I don't like pinning. It's boring. But the sewing will come out like shite if I don't pin it first.

In other news, I've gotten Toon-Kaylee some new clothes. Just picture this with a parasol:

Oh, and I made myself an AWESOME rib eye steak and mashed potatoes/mashed sweet potatoes mix last night. YUM!!!!!!!!

Shameless bragging about my awesome kid

Today was the second-to-last day of school. The teacher had the children write nice things about each other and then compiled them for each child. This is what Jacob's classmates think of him:


I cried.

I am so proud of him. He is such an awesome human being.

(PS: He just brought home his report card. Two A's and Four A-'s.)

How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation

Ok, I finished the curtain/pillows project:

Bench cushion and throw pillows.

Throw pillows for sofa.

My aim was to get it finished so that I could put the sewing machine away and clean everything up. Because when I sew, the house is taken over. The machine is on the kitchen table. The ironing board is taking up the whole of the kitchen. Various baskets, pins, chalk, scissors, rulers, and piles of fabric cover the table, counters, and virtually every horizonal surface. The floors are covered in thread and bits of fabric. I also seem to put all other activities on hold, like shopping and cleaning and feeding the cat and laundry. And so, as I said, my aim was to get this project finished so I could clean up and have my house back.

But as soon as I finished, I tricked myself by saying, "Self, since we have the machine out, why don't we just piece together a small square of the denim quilt, just to see what it's going to look like?" And I fell for it. I just finished putting nine square together, and I LOVE IT.

This is the front of the quilt. The denim is mostly mine and Jake's old jeans. The flannel is all a mixture of our shirts and pajama bottoms.

This is the back of the quilt. It's all denim, and the sewing on the front creates an overlapping circle pattern on the back.

Now I want to keep working on it FOREVER. But there are other things in life I need to/want to do!! Maybe I can reach a compromise with myself...

The extent of my fandom

And by 'fandom', I could very well mean 'obsession'.

I've opened a second Toontown Online account, and made all Firefly characters. Really.




So far I've mostly been playing Kaylee. Jake can't wait to play Jayne.

There's a limit of six characters for an account, or I would have made everyone. Inara and Simon aren't really fighters, but I'm sad that I don't have a Shepard. He would have kicked ass.

Life is Good

Today is my second day home. There's a Firefly marathon on Sci-Fi right now. I'm in the middle of sewing the new valance for my living room window. Here's the fabric:
And the sheers that I thought I'd have to hem...fit perfectly! I actually found denim colored thread for my quilt project, and also found three pair of men's jeans on clearance. More denim for the project!! My new purse, that I've been trying to find for two months, came in the mail today:
The boy will be home in a little while and I'll get to spend a few hours with him. And tonight is a new Battlestar Galactica.

Does it get any better?
